Biography
Musa Gümüş (1963–2025, RIP) was a renowned Turkish cartoonist and illustrator, born in Gaziantep, Turkey.
He graduated from Marmara University, School of Business Administration and Management. Musa began his career in national cartoon magazines, working as a cartoonist for HIBIR from 1989 to 1994. During that time, he also created illustrated stories for children in BANDO magazine, and his illustrations appeared in Nokta magazine.
From 1994 to 1998, he was a permanent staff member at the satirical magazine HBR Maymun. His works were also exhibited in the “Neighbours” exhibition in Strasbourg, supported by the European Parliament.
Together with a group of fellow artists, he co-published DINOZOR, a cartoon magazine of Cumhuriyet newspaper, where he illustrated editorial columns and cover cartoons, including the well-known series “Fathers and Sons.”
He produced illustrations and cartoons for Sistem Publishing Company and wrote scripts for a humorous radio program titled “Funny News,” which offered a satirical take on current events and politics.
After retiring from magazine work in 2000, Musa Gümüş turned his focus to international cartoon competitions. From 2001 onward, he became an active participant in global cartoon contests, earning over 134 awards, both nationally and internationally. Among his many accolades are the Grand Prix at the Cartoon World Festival in Porto (2006) and the Golden Hat Award at the Knokke-Heist Cartoon Festival in Belgium (2009).
In 2008, one of his cartoons was immortalized as a public monument in Avenida dos Aliados Square, Porto, Portugal.
He was a proud member of the Turkish Cartoonists Association, and for many years, he worked as both a cartoonist and an art teacher at MEF Schools in Istanbul, sharing his passion for visual storytelling with younger generations.
Musa Gümüş sadly passed away in 2025, leaving behind a profound legacy in the world of cartoon art. His work, humor, and humanistic spirit will continue to inspire for generations to come.
