QUINO, Joaquín Salvador LavadoTejón, was born in the Andean region of Mendoza (Argentina) on July 17, 1932, although in official records, it is noted on August 17. From his birth Quino was named to distinguish him from his uncle Joaquin Tejon, an esteemed painter and graphic designer, with whom, at the age of three, he discovered his vocation.
At thirteen he enrolled in the School of Fine Arts, but in 1949 "Tired of drawing amphorae and plaster", he abandoned it and thought of one possible profession: cartoonist and humorist.
Determined firmly to achieve his goals, at the age of eighteen he moved to Buenos Aires in search of an editor ready to publish his drawings, but he would spend three years of economic hardship before seeing his dream come true. "The day I published my First page - said remembering his debut in the weekly This is from Buenos Aires - I spent the happiest time of my life. It was in 1954. Since then and until now his humor drawings have been published uninterruptedly in countless newspapers and magazines in Latin America and Europe.
With the popularity improves its economic situation, and in 1960 has the opportunity to crown another dream: to marry with Alicia Colombo, granddaughter of Italian immigrants and with a title in chemistry.
In 1963 appears its first book of humor, "World Quino", a compilation of drawings of humor graphic mute with prologue of Miguel Brascó. Brasco himself presents it to Agens Publicidad, who was looking for a cartoonist to create a comic strip "Blondie and Peanuts" to publicize the launch of a line of household appliances called Mansfield, which is why the name of some of the characters Should begin with the letter M, hence Mafalda. Agens does not campaign, but Quino is left with a few strips that would be useful a few months later, when he gave life to the character that would make him famous.
Mafalda, the black-haired girl who hates soup and is in contradiction with adults, was first published on September 29, 1964 in the weekly Primera Plana in Buenos Aires. On March 9, 1965, with the passage of the comic strips to the newspaper El Mundo (in which Quino will publish six strips per week), the unstoppable success of the character begins, that crosses the national borders to conquer South America and soon Extends to Europe, gaining a position of leadership in the collective imagination.
Jorge Álvarez Editor publishes the first book of Mafalda that gathers the first strips in order of publication, as will be done in the following. It leaves in Argentina for Christmas and in two days it is exhausted its roll of 5,000 copies.
In Italy, the first book, "Mafalda la Contestataria", was published in 1969, with the presentation of Umberto Eco, director of the collection.
The great success and international fame will not prevent Quino, on June 25, 1973, make a decision for some disconcerting: not to draw more strips of Mafalda, because he no longer feels the need to use the expressive structure of the strips in sequence. However, interest in Mafalda has remained unchanged, in fact, its books continue to be reprinted and continue to be chosen to accompany various social campaigns (UNICEF, the Spanish Red Cross, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Argentina). From now on Quino will continue to publish weekly his well-known pages of humor that have been grouped in the collection of his books of Humor.
In 1984, invited to join the jury of the Festival of Latin American Cinema of Havana, travels to Cuba, where he begins his friendship with the film director of animation Juan Padrón and signs a contract with the Cuban Institute of Art and Cinematographic Industry (ICAIC) For the realization of short films with their pages of humor. The series is called Quinoscopios, directed by Juan Padrón on drawings and ideas of Quino.
In 1993 the Spanish company D.G. Producciones S. A., in co-production with Spanish Televisions, produces 104 episodes of Mafalda in cartoons of 1 minute duration directed by Juan Padrón at ICAIC. The cartoons were broadcast in Italy by RAI2 and in Argentina on two occasions: first by the old channel 11 and several years later by the Encuentro channel.
Throughout its race it receives multiple recognitions, among them the Official Order of the Legion of Honor, the most important honor that the French government grants to a foreigner. 2014 is a special year, as Quino turns 60 in graphic humor and Mafalda turns 50. Also this year he received in Spain the Prince of Asturias Award for Communication and Humanities and inaugurated the 40th International Book Fair of Buenos Aires.
